Personality Observations

The Lone Renegade

As soon as the Fourth Doctor came on the scene he wanted to rush off alone and discard his old responsibilities in favour of traversing the unknown. Although perhaps he was being particularly reckless at this point as part of the variable after effects of regeneration, he never seemed to lose this 'free spirit'.

Its commented that he seems to be the most lonely because of this (break out the violins :D ...). Although personally I think he had a lot of fun because of it. He didn't seem to feel too down about it although of course he, in his own words, hates goodbyes. He'll quite happily plod along alone in his own whimsical way at his own pace/terms and with only himself to talk to (Andred: "You have access to the greatest source of knowledge in the universe.", Fourth Doctor: "Well, I do talk to myself sometimes..."; The Invasion of Time).
Of course, I'm not saying that I think he should never of had a companion, especially as he had some great companions. I'm just quite fond of this fiercely rebellious aspect of his personality and so I wish to highlight it.

He was very bold, independant and with such energy that he felt none could keep up with. As a result he is one Doctor who has large gaps within his era where he possibly had many adventures totally alone. And is the only Doctor so far (21 July 2005 to be specific!) to have a complete story without a companion (The Deadly Assassin).
Some of the noted gaps are:
- During Robot the Fourth Doctor can't resist zooming off in the TARDIS for awhile. It's not apparent in the televised stories but is stated in the novelisation, apparently. Although if you note the Doctor's comment in a later story about "Sleep is for tortoises!" you can probably think back to Robot and see the Fourth Doctor appearing to go to sleep on that table as suspicious! As if sleeping on a table instead of in the TARDIS wasn't suspicious already that is... One of his experiences during this time results in the later story of The Face of Evil
- Between the companion-less The Deadly Assassin and The Face of Evil.
- Between The Invasion of Time and The Ribos Operation the Fourth Doctor probably had K-9 Mark II (whenever he got him out that box, that is). But you can read my comments on K-9 further down as to why this may count too :p

To further demonstrate this enthusiasm for being a loner the Fourth Doctor has, we have this fact that the Doctor himself states:
"I've never chosen my own company!"
Logopolis

Indeed he didn't! Of course he's such a nice fellow though that he didn't just leave one of them on a random planet and zoom away so he grew to be good friends with them. It is interesting however since he had so many adventures and companions! So let's look at how this managed to happen:

Sarah Jane Smith - Well she was already a companion to the previous Doctor.

Harry Sullivan - The Fourth Doctor did invite him inside the TARDIS to show off so technically it's his fault but don't tell him I said that :P But he didn't actually invite him as a companion. A comment at the beginning of The Ark in Space about Harry messing with the TARDIS controls makes one assume he is rather like Leela (who also messes with the TARDIS controls and becomes a companion, so there's a tip for you - want to become a companion? Leg it inside the TARDIS and push the nearest button... hopefully it won't be the self-destruct button).

Leela - Hijacks his TARDIS after the Fourth Doctor refuses to invite her (who can blame her really?).

Leela: "Take me with you"
Fourth Doctor: "Why?"
Leela: "What? Well... you like me, don't you?"
Fourth Doctor: "Well, yes, I suppose I do like you. But then I like lots of people and I can't go carting them around the universe with me. Goodbye"
The Face of Evil

K-9 - Is handed over by his owner and the Fourth Doctor seems reluctant to adopt him but Leela and K-9 decide for him without another word. I've a feeling though that the Fourth Doctor in this case was already fond of K-9 since he had just sung his praises. So it appears that he was just thinking of the owner as he probably guessed it'd be difficult for him to part with his creation and old friend. In The Ribos Operation though he mentions he'd rather K-9 than another assistant/companion so he seems to consider K-9 to be set apart. After all, he can always switch him off. Or pull his head entirely off and put it back on again after some peace and quiet :D

Leela: "Take K-9 with us?"
Fourth Doctor: "No..."
Leela: "Yes! Oh please Doctor, please, please let's take him"
*K-9 boards the TARDIS*
The Invisible Enemy

Romana - Was assigned to be his assistant as part of a mission for the Key to Time.

"An assis -- oh please. Sir, on an assignment like this, I'd much rather work alone. In my experience, assistants mean trouble! I have to protect them and show them and teach them and couldn't I.....couldn't I just manage with K-9?"
The Ribos Operation

Adric, Nyssa and Tegan - The Fourth Doctor himself sums it up! Although technically Nyssa and Tegan only really settled into the title of official 'companions' during the next Doctor's era.

"Nyssa; it was you who contacted me and begged me to find your father. And Tegan; it was your own curiosity that got you into this. And Adric; a stowaway!"
Logopolis

"There's no point being grown-up if you can't be childish sometimes"

The Fourth Doctor was a big kid at heart looking for fun and this was demonstrated in the games he would play and the toys that would randomnly pop up amongst other things.

Toys He Owns: Yoyo, Batmobile Car, Conkers, Packs of Playing Cards
Games He Played: Skip Rope, Yoyo Tricks, Hopskotch, Bowling, Chess & Checkers
He also enjoyed reading Beatrix Potter stories.
